Rajya Sabha bypoll in Assam on March 1

GUWAHATI: The bypoll for one vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Assam will be held on March 1, notified the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday.

The seat fell vacant after lone Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) MP Biswajit Daimary resigned from the upper house in November last year to join the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP). His term was to end in April, 2026.

The election will be conducted following broad guidelines in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

According to an official notification, every person shall wear face mask during every election related activity.

Thermal scanning of all persons will be carried out at the entry of hall/ room/ premises used for election purposes.

“Sanitizer shall be made available at all locations.

Social distancing shall be maintained as per the extant COVID-19 guidelines of the State Govt. and Ministry of Home Affairs,” it added.

The Chief Secretary of Assam has been directed to depute a senior officer from the State to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the election.

“Further, the Commission has also appointed the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam as Observer for this election,” the notification read.
