Rajen Gohain sex scandal: Congress takes to streets

The All Assam Mahila Congress, the Assam unit of the women’s wing of the Congress party, took to the streets on Tuesday demanding the resignation of union minister Rajen Gohain who is mired in a sex scandal.

Hundreds of women activists led by All India Mahila Congress president and Silchar Lok Sabha MP Sushmita Dev took to the streets and burnt effigies of the Minister of State (Railways) seeking his immediate resignation besides shouting slogans against the BJP-led governments, both in Assam and at the Centre.

Congress activists alleged that the Nagaon MP was misusing his powers to intimidate the complainant and cried foul over using “disgusting language & threats to the husband”.

Incidentally, a woman had lodged an FIR at Nagaon Sadar Police Station, accusing the union minister of molestation and rape. Nagaon Police had registered a case against the Railway MoS (Case No. 2592/18) under sections 417, 376 and 506 of IPC following the FIR lodged on August 2.

Gohain termed the allegations a political conspiracy to malign his image.

Although the complainant later wrote to the police stating that she wanted to withdraw the case and not continue with it any further, Nagaon Police, however, continued with the investigations as per existing legal provisions.
