Qamer stayed in Kanpur for a month, did recce of temple

PUBLISHED:

Qamer-uz-Zaman, arrested by Uttar Pradesh ATS from Shiv Nagar locality of Kanpur, was staying at a rent house in the area for a month and had conducted a recce of the Siddhi Vinayak Ganesh temple with police claiming that he was targeting the temple during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

Qamer, who hails from Jamunamukh in Assam and had joined Hizbul Mujahideen, had posted a photograph of him with an AK-47 assault rifle earlier in April this year claiming that he had joined the terrorist outfit. The photograph was posted in a social networking site and had created a flutter in Assam police amid reports that five other youths from Jamunamukh might also have joined the terror outfit.

Meanwhile, neighbours who stayed at the Shiv Nagar locality of Kanpur, told News Live that they had seen him staying in the first floor of the building but had no idea that he could be terrorist.

“He was staying in a single room at the first floor of our building for around a month. But we had no inkling that he could be member of a terrorist outfit,” a woman neighbour told News Live’s senior reporter Sunil Borah in Kanpur.

Police sources said they have found some incriminating contents from Qamer-uz-Zaman’s mobile phone, including a 10-minute video of the Siddhi Vinayak Ganesh temple, indicating that he was conducting a recce of probable targets.

The arrested terrorist, meanwhile, has been remanded to 7-day custody of Uttar Pradesh police.

On the other hand, Hojai Police arrested another person from Jamunamukh named Shah Alam for being in touch with Qamer.
