An old bridge over Indrayani river near Pune collapsed today (June 15) with several people, many of them tourists, swept away while one person has reportedly died in the incident.

The accident took place at Kundmala, a popular tourist destination, at around 3:30 pm on Sunday when a large number of visitors gathered in the area. Visitors were greater in number considering it being a Sunday when a portion of the old bridge suddenly gave way, taking with it many people who were on top of it.

Around 100 people were reportedly present on the bridge when it collapsed. While many people were able to swim to the shore, around 20 people were reportedly swept away.

Operations, reports said, are on to rescue them with NDRF personnel being rushed to the spot to bolster the rescue mission.

“It is feared that some citizens on the bridge may have been swept away. This incident is very unfortunate and I pray to God that all these citizens are safe. I have spoken to the District Collector, Pune regarding this incident and he is sending all necessary help,” Hindustan Times reported NCP leader Supriya Sule as saying.
