The Supreme Court today (July 2) directed the Assam Government to publish the second and final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) on or before July 30, thus extending the earlier deadline of June 30 by a month. NRC authorities updating the citizen’s register had failed to meet the deadline earlier set by the apex court following the devastating deluge that inundated several NRC sewa kendras leading to disruption of the update process.

A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi and Fali Nariman also directed the State Government and NRC authority not to include the names of family members of declared foreigners, families of D Voters and those whose cases are being heard by foreigners’ tribunals in the second and final draft.
The apex court has also reportedly asked State Chief Secretary TY Das and DGP Kuladhar Saikia to review the security of NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela and file an Action Taken Report within 7 days.
