GUWAHATI: The public transport service has been hit by the indefinite ‘Chakka Bandh’ called by the All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) from Monday. The association called the strike demanding an increase of fares in the State as they claim their financial health is affected by the pandemic.
The buses, trackers, e-rickshaws across Assam observed the strike pressing their demands. Meanwhile, the strike has created much inconveniences for the commuters.
“I go to the office by bus but due to the bandh today I have booked a Rapido bike taxi. After trying 5 times I got a ride. I am already late. The government should resolve the issues immediately as we daily commuters are facing a lot of issues due to the Chakka Bandh,” said an office going lady in Guwahati.
The Khanapara and Jalukbari bus stops in the city wore a deserted look as there were no long distance buses.
“We are always at trouble when such bandhs are called. It harms everyone and the government should try to avoid this kind of situations beforehand,” said a daily commuter.
In view of the strike, the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) is operating 650 buses across the state. However, many commuters allege that the number of ASTC buses is not sufficient for even Guwahati.
