AFC Bournemouth completed a double over Arsenal in the Premier League after their 2-1 victory at The Emirates on Saturday
Arsenal lost at home to AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday as the Cherries completed their first double over the Gunners in English top division while also denting preparations for Wednesday’s second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final at Paris Saint-Germain.
The Gunners, despite going 1-0 up through Declan Rise in the 34th minute, squandered the lead as they did against Cristal Palace to eventually lose 1-2 at home.
While Huijsen equalised for Bournemouth in the 67th-minute, heading home from substitute Antoine Semenyo’s long throw, Evanilson scored the winner eight minutes later as the Gunners failed to find an equaliser despite mounting a couple of serious attacks.
Arsenal stay second with 67 points from 35 matches while former champions Manchester City climbed up to third after beating Wolves 1-0 on Friday night.
Apart from denting the preparations for the Champions League second-leg in Paris, the defeat has raised concerns among Arsenal fans that the Gunners could slip even further and lose the second place in the points table as they have only three matches left in the season.
Fourth place Newcastle, who face Brighton later today, could jump to third with a win while Chelsea, currently fifth with 60 points from 34 matches face Liverpool who have already been crowned champions of the 2024-25 season.
The race for the five Champions League spots gets bitter with five Premier League clubs — Manchester City, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa — in a close race for the remaining three places with Liverpool having already qualified after finishing on top while Arsenal are also on the verge of cementing their spot in Europe next season.
