Police must be polite towards innocents and strict against offenders: CM Sarma

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday reiterated that the police should essentially be humane and polite towards innocent people and strict against offenders and wrongdoers.

The Assam CM was reacting to the recent incident in which a traffic policeman was involved in a fisticuff with a civilian.

Traffic police constable Fakhruddin Ahmed of Paltan Bazar Traffic Branch, who was part of a checking patrol party at Paltan Bazar on Friday, was seen hitting a civilian who, along with his wife and their minor child, was stopped by the team during the checking exercise.

Videos that had gone viral showed the traffic policeman punching the civilian, who was later identified as Biki Prasad Gupta, while his wife and minor child were riding pillion.

Besides asking cops to adopt a friendly attitude towards the Aam Aadmi, Chief Minister Sarma also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Admin) to take action against the erring police personnel besides directing the police to extend an apology to Gupta and his family.

CM Sarma said: “After watching the video, I directed the city police department to take strict action against the police officials for their alleged indiscipline conduct. I have asked the police to extend an apology to the person and his family. During my last Duliajan SP conference, I clearly told the SPs and police officials that they must be polite towards innocent civilians and strict against the offenders.”

It may be mentioned that Traffic constable Fakhruddin Ahmed has already been placed under suspension while another traffic policeman named Pranab Chandra Deka, who was also there during the altercation, reserve-closed.
