PM Modi tears into Nitish Kumar over population control remarks

PUBLISHED:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lashed out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his controversial remarks on the role of women’s education in population control and questioned the silence of the Opposition in the matter.

Addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna, PM Modi said such statements made against women amounted to insulting the country.

“A big leader of the INDIA alliance, ‘Ghamandiya Gathbandhan’ used indecent language for women inside (Bihar) assembly yesterday. They are not ashamed. No leader of the INDIA alliance said a single word against it. People who think like this about women, can they do anything good for you?” PM Modi said.

“Those who have this evil attitude towards our mothers and sisters, they are insulting our country. How low will you fall,” he added.

Earlier, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday apologises for his remark on population control after widespread condemnation from different quarters.

Kumar on Tuesday sparked a controversy, while stressing the importance of education among women to control the population. He had put forward a vivid description in the state assembly of how an educated woman can restrain her husband during sexual intercourse.

“The husband’s acts led to more births. However, with education, a woman knows how to restrain him… this is the reason the numbers (of births) are coming down…You, journalists also understand it well. Earlier it (fertility rate) was 4.3, but it has now reached 2.9. And, soon we will reach 2,” Kumar had explained.
