Pachyderm terror in Tamulpur

PUBLISHED:

Two wild elephants strayed into several villages of Tamulpur Friday night creating panic among villagers. The elephant duo also razed down four houses at Goybari village forcing the occupants to flee and take refuge in safer areas.

One of the houses that was pulled down by the marauding elephant duo at Goybari village in Tamulpur along the Assam-Bhutan border in Baksa district.

Villagers said elephants often come down from the hills of neighbouring Bhutan and destroy crops besides damaging houses.

Several people, the villagers further said, have been killed in the wake of increasing human-elephant conflicts.

Forest officials, who were informed about the elephants straying into the villages, succeeded in driving away the two jumbos back into the hills of Bhutan.
