Over one lakh Bangladeshi citizens living in India with expired visas

NEW DELHI:  Over one lakh Bangladeshi citizens are overstaying in India illegally beyond the period of their visa validity after legally entering during the last three years.

In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, minister of state for home Nityanand Rai informed that the number of Bangladeshis staying in India with expired visas in last three years is 1,10, 642.

According to the minister, 25,942 Bangladeshis entered India legally but overstayed their visa validity in 2017. The corresponding numbers were 49,645 in 2018 and 35,055 in 2019.

 On the other hand, till January 27 of this year 83 illegal immigrants have been apprehended along Indo-Bangladesh border and handed over to Bangladeshi authorities.

The numbers of Bangladeshi immigrants apprehended along the border in 2017, 2018 and 2019 were  1175, 1118 and 1351 respectively. They were handed over or deported to Bangladesh.
