GUWAHATI: Various organisations came out protesting the setting up of a toll gate at Nazirakhat (Highway 37), Sonapur.
The organisations led by Dimoria Students Union demanded that the construction work for the toll gate should be stopped immediately. The organisations have alleged that the government is not solving issues like traffic snarls, accidents and floods at Jorabat (all in NH 37) but is busy constructing toll gates. The students’ union has termed this step as anti-people.
“We condemn this decision of the government to construct a toll gate at Sonapur. We have already submitted a memorandum to the authorities. The circle officer has ordered suspension of work at this site so we will not accept any construction. This is a way of taxing the common people and we will protest democratically against it. The highway is still unfinished as all the necessary amenities that are required over a national highway are not available at this stretch. How can they set up a toll gate over an unfinished road?” said one of the protesters.
