ONGC successfully caps blowout at Sivasagar well, residents heave sigh of relief

The blowout at the ONGC Well No. 135 in Bhotiapar-Barichuk in Assam’s Sivasagar district was first noticed on June 12 during routine servicing operations

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on Friday (June 27) successfully capped the blowout at Well No. 135 in Bhotiapar Barichuk in Assam’s Sivasagar district, 16 days after the blowout was first noticed on June 12.

The blowout was capped at 11:15 am today (June 27), Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister
Hardeep Singh Puri stated in a post on ‘X’, formerly Twitter.

“ONGC has successfully capped the blow out of well RDS#147A at 1115 hours hrs today. This blow out started on 12th June and has been capped successfully within shortest possible time following all the best practices,” Puri stated.

“Crisis Management Team of @ONGC_ along with the international well control experts finally brought the curtains down on the gas well blow out through meticulous planning and concerted efforts in a safe manner, without any injury, casualty or fire, testifying the competency of Crisis Management,” the Union Minister further stated.

Puri further thanked Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and other State government officials “for the excellent and continuous support to the teams on the ground”.

Meanwhile, local people of Bhotiapar Barichuk locality are taking a sigh of relief after the leak was successfully plugged.

Gushes of gas were observed from Well No. RDS 147 during servicing operations on June 12. The well, situated at Rudrasagar oild field in Sivasagar district, is being operated by a private firm named SK Petro Services on behalf of ONGC.

Many people of the area had complained of skin rashes, breathing issues and other similar ailments following the blowout.

One person had also reportedly died after he suffered a heart attack following a deafening sound near the well after the blowout.
