GUWAHATI, Feb 3: Floods in the Australian state of Queensland have killed one person while thousands have been told to evacuate to higher grounds as the downpour continues.
A woman was killed in the floods as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that the disaster had brought out “the best of Australians” as he took to ‘X’ to write: “I’ve seen Australians helping one another in their time of need,” while adding that “threat from floodwaters” would persist in affected areas for days.
Flooding has been reported in coastal Hinchinbrook Shire, a locality of around 11,000 people north of Brisbane while many suburbs in the nearby city of Townsville were also impacted, Reuters reported citing authorities.
“Residents in low-lying areas should collect their evacuation kit and move to a safe place on higher ground. This situation may pose a threat to life and property,” the Reuters reported quoted regional emergency management authorities as saying on Sunday morning.
