On concluding day of 2-nation tour, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma meets Japanese business leaders & ministers in Tokyo, bats for deeper trade ties

GUWAHATI, Jan 24: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, on the final day of his five-day visit to South Korea and Japan, met Japanese business magnates and ministers of the Japanese government as he continued efforts to project Assam as an ideal investment destination for Japanese companies and industries.

Takeshi Okubo, Executive Vice President of Tokyo Electron, a vital player in the semiconductor supply chain specialising in designing equipment that create chips, called on the Assam Chief Minister today.

Chief Minister Sarma invited them to partner Assam, specially calling for ties with the Tata semi-conductor industry coming up at Jagiroad.

Chief Minister Sarma then called on Akiko Ikuina, Parliamentary Vice Minister of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who conveyed him Government of Japan’s intention to offer India and particularly Assam’s young and skilled work force opportunities in the country.

He then held a “productive meeting” with Takao Hosoya, CEO of Mizuho Securities, a leading financial institution of Japan, besides inviting them to Advantage Assam 2.0.

Chief Minister Sarma also met Yoshiaki Asakura, Vice President of leading Japanese electrical engineering firm Yokogawa. The firm already has relations with Assam through their collaboration with Numaligarh Refineries Limited (NRL) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

He also met Hara Shohei, Senior Vice President of JICA, and discussed how the Government of Assam can partner with JICA and Japan External Trade Organization to establish an exclusive industrial park for Japanese companies.

He then met with a team from Toyota Motor Corporation, led by Terutoshi Hamano, in Tokyo today and discussed the possibility of setting up an automobile ancillary unit in Assam and about the Assam Government’s efforts to bring a global automotive firm to the State.

He also asked Toyota to augment its existing skilling programmes being offered in Assam Engineering Institute and Govt ITI, Nalbari, to other institutes.

Chief Minister Sarma also meet with representatives from Japan’s leading universities during which he asked them to explore linkages with Assam based universities; particularly through joint degree courses, student exchange programmes and collaborating in research and skilling.
