Guwahati:  On the occasion of 75th Independence Day, Pinky Karmakar has received her appointment by the Assam Government. She has been inducted into the labour department.

The letter was handed to Karmakar by Tea Tribes Welfare & Labour Welfare minister Sanjoy Kishan.

Pinky Karmakar, from Assam’s Dibrugarh district who represented India as the Olympic torchbearer at the London Olympics in 2012, was toiling as a daily-wage leaf plucker at Borborooah tea estate, earning Rs 167 a day.

Earlier Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma met the 2012 London Olympics torchbearer Pinki Karmakar and promised her to help with all the needs.

After receiving the appointment letter from the state government Pinki thanked CM Sarma and everyone who has helped her in her journey.

“I am very happy and want to thank all the media persons who have helped me. It is only because of you people now I will be able to live a good life. For the last 9 years, I was working in the tea estate and did face a lot of hardships. I will never forget those days but I am very happy to receive the appointment letter from the government.  I want to thank CM Sarma, Labour Welfare minister Sanjoy Kishan and Doomdooma MLA Rupesh Gowala for giving me what I deserve”, said Karmakar.
