Odisha: Wife cremates husband after relatives refuse over coronavirus scare

Guwahati: A woman broke age-old traditions in Odisha’s Malkangiri district by lighting the funeral pyre of her deceased husband. Though his coronavirus test results came out negative, none of his relatives or neighbours came forward to cremate the body, fearing infection.

Accodrding to a report in  India Today, the deceased, Krushna Naik, worked as BEO (Block Education Officer) and fell ill two days back. He was admitted at Jeypore Hospital and later shifted to Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput where his condition worsened.

A Covid-19 test of Krushna naik came negative.

After Naik’s health deteriorated, doctors at Laxman Nayak Medical college advised his family to shift him to Vishakhapatnam. Naik breathed his last on the way there. Following this, his body was brought to his native place.

His neighbours and relatives feared that he died of coronavirus and hence none of them came forward to cremate the body.

Left with no other option, Naik’s wife wore a PPE kit as a precautionary step and performed the last rites of the deceased, following all coronavirus protocols.
