Oct floods in Assam; gushing water washes away bridge, dumper

GUWAHATI, Oct 27: Various places in Assam are under water following the rains that lashed the State since Friday. Although the skies have cleared up at many places today, many villages have been inundated across Assam following a drastic increase in water levels in many rivers.

The Kopili river is flowing above the danger mark and has inundated several villages in Hojai, Lanka and adjoining areas. Surging waters washed away the Langri bridge in Dima Hasao district that connects Lanka and Umrangso towns snapping road communication. A dumper was also swept away by gushing water.

Many villages in Kampur in Nagaon district have also been inundated by the Kopili.

Rescue teams have been pressed into service to shift marooned villagers to safer places.

Rainfall and overcast skies have also dampened Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations in Silchar town with waterlogging reported in various localities of the town ollowing incessant rains.

Water from the embankment breached by Bhogdoi river in Jorhat inundated Malow Pathar locality with people fuming at district administration and government officials for not reparing the damaged embankment.
