Oct 30 serial blasts: Scars still fresh, won’t heal easily, say victim families

GUWAHATI, Oct 30: Absolute carnage across Assam — at Ganeshguri, Pan Bazaar and at the CJM court complex in Guwahati, and in Barpeta Road and Kokrajhar — on Oct 30, 2008, following the nine near-simuultaneous explosions triggered by the Ranjan Daimary-led faction of the NDFB that killed 88 people besides maiming nearly 800 more.

Eleven years later, victim families say the scars are still fresh and won’t heal easily.

Memorial functions were held at the blast sites in the memory of those who lost their lives in the chilling explosions – the deadliest in the history of insurgency in Assam and the entire Northeast.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal offered his tributes to the blast victims at condolence functions at Ganeshguri and CJM Court premises. He also pledged the government’s commitment to deal with terrorism and insurgency with an iron hand.

The lawyers’ fraternity also paid homages to colleagues and friends who lost their lives in the explosion at the CJM Court.

Meanwhile, family members and kin of the blast victims expressed their anger over promises that were made by the past Congress government but were never kept.

“We lost our bread winners in the blasts. The government assured us of adequate compensation and a government job. But the promises remained promises. We have not got justice neither have we received adequate compensation,” family members of blast victims said.

We appeal to the present BJP-led Government to keep the promises and also provide us justice by punishing the perpetrators of the blasts.
