In a spine-chilling incident, two youths from Guwahati were tied to a light post and lynched by an irate mob at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Friday night suspecting them to be child traffickers. Abhijeet Nath of Chachal locality of Guwahati and Nilotpal Das hailing from Nabagraha and working as a sound engineer in Goa had gone to Karbi Anglong yesterday. However, the break from their busy schedule turned out to be the worst nightmare for them as a mob of around 20-25 people attacked them at Dokmoka suspecting them to be child traffickers.

Incidentally rumours of child traffickers known as ‘Xupadhora’ among the people have been doing the rounds at several places in Assam, particularly in interior localities. Messages are also being circulated through various social media platforms, including popular messaging application WhatsApp, urging people to remain alert. Amid such rumours the mob mistook Abhijeet and Nilotpal, who had long curly hair, to be child traffickers.

They irate mob pulled them out of their car, tied them to a light-post, attacked, kicked and punched them even though the duo kept pleading their innocence, claiming that they are from Assam and are Assamese.

“I am an Assamese. My father’s name is Gopal Chandra Das; my mother is Radhika Das,” Nilotpal kept pleading to the mob to spare them but to no avail as the kicks and punches on them continued till they breathed their last.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbannada Sonowal condemned the incident and announced a high-level probe. ADGP Mukesh Agarwalla has been rushed to Dokmoka to investigate the incident. No arrests have been made so far but police have identified many members of the mob that killed Nilotpal and Abhijeet.
