Govt reacts to News Live report on children crossing river in kitchen vessels

The Assam Government today (Sep 26) reacted to the News Live story that showed small students risk their lives while crossing a river in kitchen vessels to reach their schools and back at Kuruati near Sootea in Biswanath district of Assam. Minister Pallab Lochan Das, while reacting on behalf of the State Government, claimed the attention of the government has been drawn to the issue and that it will look into the issue and take possible remedial measures.

Visuals had showed how small school students of West Kuruati LP School, some as young as 6-7 years along with their headmaster, risked their lives by crossing a river in kitchen vessels to reach their school and then head back home using the water route in the same kitchen vessels.

The children said they feel scared while crossing the river in such manner but claimed they do so since they don’t have another option in the absence of a bridge over the river.

The issue has also evoked sharp reactions with people expressing shock and anger over lack of development activities in several interior pockets of the State.
