Foreign liquor worth Rs 168.54 crore comes under road roller

Thousands of bottles and cans of foreign liquor seized from Khatkhati in Karbi Anglong following the crackdown on the liquor mafia are being destroyed in a phased manner. Assam Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya along with other officials of his department and Bureau of Investigations Economic Offences (BIEO) destroyed foreign liquor bottles and cans at Boragaon in Guwahati today (Aug 10).

Illegal liquor worth an astronomical Rs 168.54 crore in total will be destroyed in phases, including the one carried out today, with the Assam Excise Minister driving a road roller himself to crush the liquor.

“We will continue this exercise. It’s part of the crackdown on the liquor mafia. We will be destroying the liquor in a phased manner. The total worth of the foreign liquor seized was over Rs 168.54 crore,” Suklabaidya said.

Police and Excise department had launched a crackdown on the liquor mafia, seizing around 17,410 cases of India-made Foreign Liquor in 14 Guwahati-bound trucks from four different places at Khatkati in Karbi Anglong in 2016.

BIEO had lodged four cases and arrested 13 people — Feroz Alam Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Umesh Kumar Jaiswal, Umesh Roy, Kamaljit Singh, Jaikom Singh, Rajesh Jalan, Bijay Phangso, Danny Chanda, Jakir Hussain, Lakshman Singh, Ashok Prasad Yadav and Ganesh Chandra Das — in connection with the scam.
