Fire at Neo-natal ICU in GMCH, doused

Close shave for over 60 new born babies after a fire broke out at the Neo-natal ICU at the Obstetrics & Gynecology unit of GMCH. The fire is believed to have started from a machine called the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) in the ventilation unit at the inborn cell.

Although several fire tenders were rushed to GMCH after the blaze was reported, the fire was dowsed using fire extinguishers. All babies along with their attendants and other staff members are safe with officials shifting the new borns from the cell where the blaze started.

There were 24 babies at the inborn cell when the fire broke out te total number of babies at the NICU was 68.

The babies were later shifted back to the NICU after the fire was doused.

Pijush Hazarika, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, visited the NICU where the fire broke out and took stock of the situation besides announcing an inquiry to officially ascertain the cause of the fire.
