Elephant enters Guwahati, again

PUBLISHED:

No let-up in jumbo terror in Assam as elephants continue to stray into residential localities across the State, including Guwahati, in the past 24 hours. An elephant strayed into Panjabari locality of the city from the Amsang reserve forest late Tuesday night leading to panic among the residents. Although the elephant did not attack houses and people, residents of the locality remained indoors with the pachyderm strolling on the streets outside.

The elephant was finally shooed away into the Amsang forest by police personnel and forest officials, bursting crackers to drive away the pachyderm from the area.

Meanwhile, a man was injured at Hahim Tilapara in Boko in Kamrup district after he was attacked by an elephant. The injured person, 35-year-old Raja Rabha, was on his way to the market when he was attacked by the elephant.

Rabha, who suffered injuries on his back, was immediately rushed to hospital where he is being treated.

Local people said a herd of wild elephants numbering around 30 has been frequently straying into villages and paddy fields in search of food due to shrinking forest cover.

On the other hand, the carcass of an elephant was recovered in the forests near the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border. The carcass was spotted by some tea garden employees and was decomposing suggesting that the elephant had died many days ago.
