At least 20 newborns die at JMCH in a week, probe announced

At least 20 newborns have died at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH) in a week, sending hospital authorities into a tizzy. The deaths were reported at the Special Care Newborn Unit during Nov1 to Nov 6 with hospital authorities claiming that the deaths were due to various ailments but ruled out medical negligence.

JMCH Superintendent Dr Saurav Borkakoti told News Live that a probe has already been announced.

“15 infants have died at the Special Care Newborn Unit of the JMCH between Nov 1 & 6. We have already announced a probe. The deaths, however, are not because of any medical negligence,” Dr Borkakoti said, however, admitting that they receive nearly a hundred women in labour every day and due to shortage of beds, more than a single woman sometimes share a single bed.

Meanwhile, patients and attendants made some shocking accusations, accusing hospital staff of seeking tips from patients and attendants. They also claimed paucity of beds and unhygienic atmosphere at the special care unit.

On the other hand, the health department has sent a high-level team of health officials to the JMCH. The Director of Medical Education is leading the team while an UNICEF oficial & a GMCH paediatrician are also part of the team. Another specialist, Dr Rita Bora from the Assam Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) will join the team at Jorhat.
