GUWAHATI: North East India got its first human milk bank in Guwahati. The human milk bank has been set up at the Satribari Christian Hospital in the city with the financial assistance of the Rotary Foundation. It became operational from today.
The human milk bank in Guwahati is the 15th in the entire country.
“We are happy to have the first human milk bank in the North East. It will help in reducing the under-5 and neonatal mortality rates in the region,” said an official.
“Despite mushrooming of neonatal intensive care units (NICU) across the State, the need for sufficient human milk to provide adequate nutritional support to premature babies or newborn babies with low birth weight was always felt,” he added.
