Fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi, wanted in the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank scam, has been arrested in London, the UK police said. The Enforcement Directorate probing the case against him confirmed his arrested, stating in a statement that the absconding businessman was picked up from Holborn metro station in central London yesterday (March 19).
Sources said the arrested businessman is being produced in the Westminster Magistrate’s Court amid reports that he could be extradited to India.
The 48-year-old billionaire had escaped the country last year before the detection of the 13,000-crore-rupee PNB scam along with his relative Mehul Choksi who has now been granted citizenship by Antigua.
