Nilamani Phookan to be conferred Jnanpith Award in Maiden award ceremony in Assam

Guwahati: Assam will be hosting the prestigious Jnanpith Award ceremony for the first time today. The 2021 Jnanpeeth Award will be presented to renowned poet Nilamani Phookan.

The special ceremony, which will be hosted at the Rabindra Bhawan, will have Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Guest.

It may be mentioned here that Phookan is the third recipient of the country’s highest literary award from Assam, after Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya and Mamoni Raisam Goswami.

Well, Phookan was earlier awarded the 1981 Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese for his poetry collection, ‘Kobita’. A recipient of Padma Shri, Phookan was also given the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2002.
