Motorists using expressways will have to shell out more from June 3 as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to hike tolls across the country by an average of 5%.
The annual revision of highway user fee, which is expected to be in the range of average 5%, was earlier to come into effect on April 1. But the hike was deferred due to the Lok Sabha elections.
According to a report by news agency Reuters, toll charges will be hiked by 3-5% across the country from Monday.
The toll charges in India are revised annually in line with inflation and was due to come into effect on April 1. However, due to 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the annual increase was put on hold.
“As the election process is over, the revision of user fee (toll) rates, which was put on hold during the elections, would become effective from June 3,” a senior NHAI official told Reuters.
According to news agency PTI, there are around 855 user fee plazas on the national highway network on which user fee is levied as per the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
Out of these, around 675 are public-funded fee plazas and 180 are operated by concessionaires.
