Forty-eight hours after News Live beamed visuals of lower primary school students of Kuruati near Sootea in Biswanath district of Assam risking their lives by crossing a river in large kitchen vessels to reach their school and back, Biswanath district administration swung into action and provided them with a boat.
The visuals telecast by News Live created a flutter prompting district administration officials to arrange a boat for them.
“It’s a great day for us. Our children won’t have to cross the river in aluminium pots. A boat is much safer. However, we need a bridge over the river that will end our communication woes,” a father of one of the school students told News Live.

Visuals had showed how small school students of West Kuruati LP School, some as young as 6-7 years along with their headmaster, risk their lives by crossing a river in kitchen vessels to reach their school and then head back home using the water route in the same kitchen vessels.
The children said they feel scared while crossing the river in such manner but claimed they do so since they don’t have another option in the absence of a bridge over the river.

Now that they have the services of a boat, they looked pleased and happy, waving to their parents and guardians as the boat carrying them rowed across the river.
“We are very happy. The boat will make it easier for us to reach our school and come back home.” a student said.
Meanwhile, Biswanath legislator Promod Borthakur said that he will take the initiative so that a bridge can be built over the river.
