News Live Exclusive: How a School Principal became an NDFB(S) militant

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: Till 2013, Evangel Narzary was working as the principal of a school. But suddenly he decided to leave the life of comfort and joined proscribed national Democratic Front of Bodoland(S). Eventually, Evangel Narzary alias NE Esara was elevated to the foreign secretary of the rebel group.

Narzary who surrendered at an event in Guwahati today told News Live, “I used to think for my people since my student days. I realized that the power and functions provided to Bodos through different agreements and talks were not enough. The condition of Bodos residing outside BTAD is not good. We are deprived of our political rights. Therefore, I joined the organization to do something for my community.”

“I left my family, two and half year old son and my social position to join the organization,” said teacher-turned-rebel Evangel alias NE Easara.

In an exclusive interview, the surrendered foreign secretary of the NDFB(S) told News Live that he had crossed Nagaland and entered Myanmar for training.

“I went to make changes. But changes have not taken place yet,” the former militant added.

“Around twelve rebel groups including ULFA(I), KLO and  NDFB(S) were together at Myanmar base. Manipuri and Naga outfits were also there,” stated Evangel.

Speaking about the training process of the insurgent group, the foreign secretary of NDFB(S) said, “The first training in Myanmar was provided by NSCN(K). But after that, we did not seek NSCN(K)’s help during my time and provided our training ourselves.”

He also revealed meeting of ULFA(I) commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah on two occasions.

The surrendered militant also corroborated the news of differences of opinions among different rebel groups of Assam based in Myanmar.

Expressing his views on recent Suspension of Operations agreement between NDFB(S) and the government, Evangel Narzary said, “All the cadres have come to mainstream. Cadres from Bhutan, Nepal and Arunachal Pradesh are also coming. There is not a single NDFB(S) cadre left in Myanmar.”
