The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) is going all out against the government and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and staged a sit-in demonstration in Guwahati today.
The NESO, an apex organization of student bodies of the Northeast that includes the All Assam Students’ Union, Khasi Students’ Union, Naga Students’ Federation, Garo Students’ Union, All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union among others, staged a sit-in protest at Dighalipukhuri and demanded the government not to go ahead with the bill.
NESO president and AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjee, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, along with leaders of other northeastern student bodies took part in the demonstration.
Incidentally, in a first-of-its-kind development, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) joined the AASU to protest the citizenship bill.
The AASU had on Friday taken out torch rallies in various places of Assam to oppose the bill.
The AGP, meanwhile, began a state-wide signature campaign against the bill.
NESO will also hold protests against the bill in all Northeastern States on May 21 besides asking chief ministers of all the seven States to follow the example set by NPP-led Meghalaya Government and oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
