NEEPCO releases water from Doyang hydro project

PUBLISHED:

Many villages along the Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat district were inundated after the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) released water from its Doyang Hydro Power project following heavy rainfall.

After the water level of the reservoir increased and neared the spilling level, NEEPCO authorities released water from four gates of the hydropower project reservoir located at Wokha district of Nagaland that led to a sudden increase in water level of the Doyang river.

Several villages near the Merapani sector of the Assam-Nagaland border were inundated following the sudden release of water by NEEPCO with many villagers alleging apathy on the part of administration officials in providing them relief.

Villagers of Sonali Pathar, Padum Pathar, Sukanbeel and other hamlets, many of them in their sleep, were caught unaware as water entered their houses following the sudden release of water from the reservoir.

NEEPCO, on the other hand, is facing flak for the sudden release of water and for only writing a letter to the Golaghat district administration to inform them about their decision to release water.
