“Himanta Biswa Sarma is the Chief Minister, and he will lead the election campaign,” Shah told The Assam Tribune.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the BJP and its allies will fight the 2026 Assam Assembly elections under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma is the Chief Minister, and he will lead the election campaign,” Shah told The Assam Tribune in a special interview.

The Union Home Minister further said that the NDA “will remain intact” and that there won’t be any reduction in the number of parties, confirming that the AGP and the UPPL will remain constituents of the NDA in the 2026 elections as well while any new additions would be decided by the “local unit”, The Assam Tribune report further stated.

Home Minister Shah dismissed any anti-incumbency against the government saying that the Himanta Biswa Sarma government has “done some excellent work” and that “the public knows that our intentions are honest”.

He also spoke highly about the pro-people welfare schemes initiated by the present State government and said that “the Assam government has done a fabulous job in welfare for the poor.”

“I do not think these schemes cause anti-incumbency. Rather, they cause pro-incumbency,” Home Minister further told the newspaper in the interview.
