In just one day, nature’s fury has shaken the heart of North East India. Heavy rains, landslides, flash floods, and falling trees have claimed at least 16 lives across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Families are grieving, homes are damaged, and rescue teams are racing against time.
What Happened in Assam
Assam witnessed three deadly landslides in its capital city Guwahati alone. The worst one happened in Bonda area, where a newly built house was suddenly hit by a landslide. A woman named Poonam Goswami and two children died as the wall collapsed while the children were playing. That house was constructed just four months ago.
In two other incidents, one man named Dipjyoti Boro died in Datalpara, and another man lost his life in Maligaon area during early morning hours. With lives lost and families shattered, Guwahati is left in shock.
Arunachal Pradesh: A Car Washed Away
In East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, seven people are feared dead after their car was washed away by a landslide on the Bana–Seppa road late Friday night. Rescue operations are ongoing, but hope is fading as weather continues to worsen.
Meghalaya’s Pain: Lives Lost and Homes Broken
Meghalaya, too, saw heartbreaking scenes. In Lumkyntung village, a 50-year-old woman named Klosliya Kharkongor was killed when a landslide hit her house. Two others in the same house were injured. Earlier that day, a man named Samborlang Tariang drowned in Wah Krot stream in Mylliem Block.
Several districts in Meghalaya — East Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and South West Garo Hills — have been hit hard. At least 25 villages are affected. Roads are blocked, schools damaged, and trees have fallen, leaving entire regions cut off and helpless.
Tripura: A Drowning Incident
In Tripura’s West district, one person drowned in Jiranai area due to flash floods. The rain hasn’t stopped, and water levels continue to rise.
Flood Alert in Assam
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported floods in three districts — Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Golaghat — and eight revenue circles. Urban floods were also reported in Kamrup Metro and Cachar. Teams from NDRF and SDRF are working to evacuate people and provide relief.
Government’s Response
Meghalaya’s Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma chaired an emergency meeting with all Deputy Commissioners. The focus was on rescue plans, relief measures, and assessing the damage. As per reports, many roads, schools, and shops have been destroyed or heavily damaged.
This is not just a weather update — it is a cry for help from families who have lost their loved ones and homes. The people of North East India are battling nature’s fury with courage, but they need support. As rescue teams continue their work, let’s hope for better weather and safer days ahead.
