Naga smugglers attack Assam Police with AK-47 in Charaideo

GUWAHATI: On Monday morning a team of Assam Police jawans was attacked by Naga miscreants inside the Abhaypur Reserve Forest in Charaideo District of upper Assam.

The Assam Police team led by Suman Saha, Sub-inspector, Sonari Police Station was part of the ongoing operation against illegally-smuggled wood from the Abhaypur Reserve Forest near the Assam-Nagaland border.

Inside the Abhaypur Reserve Forest, the Assam Police team noticed a temporary camp and when they tried to encircle it, three Naga miscreants came out brandishing automatic weapons. On being challenged the Naga miscreants from the temporary camp opened fire at the Assam Police team with AK-47 assault rifles.

The Assam Police team also returned fire. The encounter lasted for over half-an-hour and several rounds were fired from both sides. The miscreants taking advantage of the deep forest managed to escape. The police team claims that the miscreants were NSCN members. As per latest reports nobody has been hurt in the incident.

Such armed attacks with automatic weapons have become common in forest areas near Assam-Nagaland border.
