The death toll following the Myanmar-Thailand earthquake is expected to rise further
GUWAHATI, March 30: The death toll in the Myanmar-Thailand earthquake continues to rise with over 1,600 people reported dead as authorities in Myanmar fear the count will rise further with many injured people in critical condition while the hunt for survivors continue.
1,644 dead in Myanmar, 17 in Bangkok
While 1,644 people have reportedly died in Myanmar, the death toll in Bangkok which also bore the brunt of the devastating quake has risen to 17.
12 dead in Bangkok high-rise collapse, rescue operations continue
Rescuers in Bangkok are searching for possible survivors who could be trapped inside the rubble of the 30-storey under-construction building that came crashing down.
Twelve people have died after the under-construction building crashed down like a pack of cards, trapping at least 43 people. Search for other workers feared trapped under the debris continues, reports have stated.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority said 32 people were injured and 83 are still unaccounted for after the 7.7 magnitude quake struck Myanmar on Friday leading to very strong tremors in the Thai capital city.
Damaged roads and infrastructure hindering relief work: UN
Rescue and relief operations in Myanmar have been hindered by damaged roads and infrastructure, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
“Damage to the Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw-Mandalay expressway led to service disruptions, with cracks and surface distortions forcing highway buses to halt operations”, the UN agency said in a statement.
Two C-17 aircrafts with Indian aid, Indian Army Field Hospital Unit lands in Myanmar
India has dispatched more aid materials as two C-17 aircrafts with a 118-member Indian Army Field Hospital Unit has landed in Myanmar with 60 tonnes of relief materials.

“Two C-17 aircraft with 118 member Indian Army Field Hospital Unit, including Women & Child Care services and 60 tonnes of relief material have landed in Myanmar. With these, five relief flights from India have landed in Myanmar today,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated in a post on ‘X’ on Saturday.

‘Operation Brahma’: India hands over 1st tranche of relief materials to Myanmar
India had earlier handed over the first tranche of relief materials to Myanmar with Abhay Thakur, India’s Ambassador to Myanmar, handing over the relief materials to Yangon’s Chief Minister U Soe Thein.
“Operation Brahma: India hands over the relief material to Myanmar. The first consignment of relief material was formally handed over to Chief Minister of Yangon U Soe Thein by Ambassador Abhay Thakur in Yangon today,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated in another post on ‘X’.
NDRF team lands in Myanmar
A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also landed in Naypyitaw on Saturday and was received by Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur and Maung Maung Lynn, Ambassador-at-large, in Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MEA stated.

The NDRF team will proceed to Mandalay and contribute in the rescue operations, the MEA stated.
