Murshidabad violence: Over 150 arrested; Hindus attacked, ‘forced to flee’, claims BJP

Three persons, including a father-son duo, have been killed in the Murshidabad violence following protests against the amended Waqf legislation

Following the Murshidabad violence triggered by protests against the amended Waqf law and reported attacks on Hindus forcing many families to flee fearing their lives in the Muslim-dominated district, over 150 people have been taken into custody while security has been beefed up after three people, including a father-son duo, were killed in the violence.

Prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have been imposed in violence-hit areas, West Bengal Police stated, while mobile internet has been suspended.

The bodies Harogobindo Das and his son Chandan Das, reports said, were found with multiple stab wounds at their home in Jafrabad in Samserganj on Saturday after the violence began with the BJP claiming that Hindu families were attacked by Muslim mobs.

Several vehicles, including police vans, were set on fire while stones were hurled at security forces as violence rocked various parts of the State on April 8.

At least 18 policemen were also injured in the violence.

Five companies of the BSF were deployed in the Muslim-dominated district as the BJP claimed that over 400 Hindus have been forced to flee their homes following the violence.

“More than 400 Hindus from Dhulian, Murshidabad driven by fear of religiously driven bigots were forced to flee across the river & take shelter at Par Lalpur High School, Deonapur-Sovapur GP, Baisnabnagar, Malda,” BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, wrote on ‘X’, formerly Twitter.

“Religious persecution in Bengal is real,” he added in his post and continued: “Appeasement politics of TMC has emboldened radical elements. Hindus are being hunted, our people are running for their lives in their own land! Shame on the State Govt for allowing this breakdown of law & order”.

“I urge the Central Paramilitary Forces deployed in the District, the State Police and the district administration to ensure the safe return of these displaced Hindus & protect their lives from this jihadist terror.

Bengal is burning. The social fabric is torn. Enough is enough,” he concluded, sharing images and videos where people were heard claiming how miscreants, allegedly Muslim mobs, set fire to houses while policemen did nothing to protect them and instead fled from the scene.

Meanwhile BJP Lok Sabha MP from West Bengal, Jyotirmay Singh Mahato, has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting that select border districts of West Bengal be declared ‘disturbed areas’ under AFSPA following alleged attacks on Hindus.
