The family, consisting of mother Golapi Devi and her daughters, had gone to the river in the Powerhouse area of Chandrapur for a bath. What began as a peaceful afternoon turned into a devastating tragedy.
According to eyewitnesses, the younger daughter started drowning while bathing. Seeing her in danger, her elder sister Nilakshi Kumari immediately jumped in to help. But the river’s current was too strong. Nilakshi too was swept away. In a desperate attempt to save her daughters, Golapi Devi then jumped into the water. Sadly, she also could not make it back to the shore.
Locals who witnessed the incident quickly alerted the authorities. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Assam Police rushed to the spot and launched a search operation. Despite their best efforts, all three lives were lost to the river’s powerful flow. As per the sources, all the three dead bodies have been found.
This heartbreaking incident is a reminder of how dangerous rivers can be, especially during strong currents and without proper safety. The grief-stricken area is mourning the loss of three innocent lives — a mother’s brave but helpless act and her daughters’ desperate fight for survival.
The community has come together in support of the grieving family, and many are urging for more awareness and safety steps around rivers and natural water bodies, especially during seasonal changes when water levels can be unpredictable.
People living near the Kalang River have shared their concerns and called for signboards and rescue equipment at popular bathing spots to avoid such tragedies in the future.
