GUWAHATI, Jan 7: At least 53 people were killed and over 60 injured, some of them critically, after an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale jolted Tibet near the Nepalese border today morning.
The quake struck the northern foothills of the Himalayas at Tingri, a rural county that serves as the northern gateway to the Everest region, at 9:05 am local time (6:35 am IST) with tremors felt in Nepal, Bhutan and India, including in many parts of Assam.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) stated that two more earthquakes also struck the region shortly after the first one.
People ran out of their homes as the quake shook buildings creating terror and panic among residents.
Today’s quake is said to be the most powerful within a 200-km radius from the epicentre.
Nearly 9,000 people had died and more than 22,000 were injured when a 7.8-magnitude quake struck Nepal in 2015.
