PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: Naga Civil Bodies from across the region including the Naga Students Federation and its units across , Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar called for a shutdown in all Naga areas from 6 am to 12 pm today as a mark of solidarity with the 15 civilians killed in Mon firing.

Section 144 has been imposed in Mon whereby any gathering of more than five persons is prohibited.

Besides this, internet services have been turned down in the district to prevent the spread of any rumours to avoid any untoward occurrences.
The 15 civilians were killed by security forces in what appears to be a counter-insurgency operation gone wrong.

This incident has led to widespread condemnation across the political spectrum.

After Saturday’s firing incident in the Oting area of Mon’s Tizit subdivision, the situation went out of control again in the district headquarter town when angry protesters waiting for the funeral got impatient and ransacked the office of the Konyak Union, the apex Konyak tribal body in the heart of Mon.

Later, the protestors comprising around 200 strong, marched to the nearby Assam Rifles camp attacking it and setting some establishments on fire yesterday.

This prompted the Assam Rifles troops to open fire that killed two of the protesters and injured several others.

Meanwhile, the situation continues to be tense in Nagaland with tight security being kept in all parts to avoid any untoward incident from happening.
The Centre is also monitoring the situation closely.

The NSF also called for a 5 day mourning period and has appealed to the public to refrain from participating in the Hornbill festival.

Meanwhile, the Apex Naga student body has also demanded revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act or AFSPA from all Naga inhabited Areas and to provide befitting compensation to all the victims.
