Mizoram records 168 new COVID-19 cases, tally at 6,299

Aizawl: Mizoram on Sunday reported 168 new COVID-19 cases, which pushed the tally in the northeastern state to 6,299, an official said.

Of the fresh cases, 99 were reported from Aizawl district, 19 from Lunglei, 18 from Lawngtlai, 16 from Serchhip, 10 from Kolasib, five from Siaha and one from Champhai.

Forty-five new patients have travel history, and 123 detected during contact tracing, the official said.

Thirteen policemen, three Border Security Force personnel and two Armed Reserve Police Force staffers are among new patients.

Twelve of the 13 state police personnel, who tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours, have recently returned from West Bengal after completing election duties there, he said.

According to the official, 71 new patients have developed symptoms of COVID-19.

The death toll remained at 15 as no new fatality due to the infection was reported since Saturday, he said.

Around 140 policemen, who were entrusted with poll duties in Assam and West Bengal, have so far tested positive for the disease in Mizoram.

The state now has 1,299 active cases, and 4,985 people have recovered from the infection.

The state has conducted 3,08,842 sample tests for COVID-19, including 2,128 in the last 24 hours.

State immunisation officer Dr Lalzawmi said that 2,09,089 people have been inoculated with 46,018 of them having received both doses of the vaccine. (PTI)
