GUWAHATI: Assam Water Resources minister Pijush Hazarika has directed officials to submit the list of probable embankments over which roads will be constructed. The Assam Budget 2021-22 had announced the construction of 1000 kilometers of road-cum-embankments in the Brahmaputra and Barak Valley. The embankments will be strengthened and roads will be built by the Public Works Department. Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma holds the PWD portfolio.
Chairing a review meeting at Jal Bhawan in Bashista, Guwahati, Pijush Hazarika took stock of various works of the department. The minister said that there would be no irregularities in the transfer of engineers and officials in the Water Resources department.
Talking to the engineers Pijush Hazarika said that the department’s image has taken a hit among the public due to the misunderstanding during flood time. He urged the engineers to come up with a better work culture.
The two major problems in Assam are floods and erosion and it is the duty of the department to minimize the loss from these two problems said Hazarika.
The Water Resources minister directed the officials to start the work to stop erosion and floods during November and end it before May. The minister also had a discussion with the contractors to understand their difficulties. The minister told the contractors that job contracts will be given based on earlier performance. He urged the department officials, engineers and contractors to come together to work for Mission Flood Free Assam.
