Minimum wage of Assam tea garden workers to be increased in next 10 days: Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the minimum wage of tea garden workers of the state will be increased within next 10 days.

Addressing the ceremonial distribution event of the third phase of the ‘Chah Bagicha Dhan Puraskar Mela’ at Assam Veterinary College playground, Khanapara in Guwahati, Dr. Sarma said that a notification for revision of wages will be issued soon.

“In next 10 days, there will be notification which will increase the wages of the tea workers. You will definitely get a good news whenever the next cabinet meeting is held,” Sarma said at the event which was attended by union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Under the  ‘Chah Bagicha Dhan Puraskar Mela’, Rs. 3,000 will be credited to 7,46,667  tea workers each as the third tranche through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode.

The flagship scheme was launched in the financial year 2017-18.

The objective of the ‘Chah Bagicha Dhan Puraskar Mela’ is to incentivise and strengthen the efforts of financial inclusion of the tea tribe community.

In phase-I of the scheme, Rs. 2500 was credited to 6,33,411 bank accounts of tea garden workers in 2017-18.

In phase-II, 7,15,979 workers got Rs. 2500 under the scheme.
