GUWAHATI, Dec 27: India were reduced to 164/5 at Stumps on Day 2 of the fourth Test at the MCG despite a 102-run partnership for the third wicket between opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli.
Jaiswal was unfortunately run out for a 118-ball 82 while Kohli lost his wicket after making a gritty 36. Australia had posted 474 runs on the board, thanks to Steve Smith’s 34th Test century.
Rohit Sharma, opening the innings with Jaiswal, was out cheaply for 3 while KL Rahul, who was looking set and on-course to making a decent contribution, was bowled by Pat Cummins for 24 (42).
Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja were batting on 6 and 4 runs respectively when stumps were drawn for the day.
Earlier in the day, Steve Smith raced to his 11th test century against India, the highest by any batter, surpassing Joe Root who has 10 tons against the Indians in the longest format of the game.
Smith was dismissed for 140 by Akash Deep.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah took 4 wickets conceding 99 runs in 28.4 overs while Jadeja picked up 3 and Akash Deep took 2.
The five-Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is currently tied 1-1. India had won the first test at Perth, registering their biggest test victory over Australia in Australia by defeating the hosts by 295 runs.
Rohit’s men, however, lost the second Test at Adelaide as Australia won by 10 wickets.
The rain-truncated third test at the Gabba in Brisbane had ended in a draw.
