Mass Shooting in Mexico: In a tragic incident that has shaken Mexico, a joyful celebration turned into horror when gunmen opened fire during a religious event in Irapuato, a city in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. The festival was being held in honour of St. John the Baptist. People were dancing, drinking, and enjoying the night when suddenly gunshots rang out, causing panic and chaos.
Eyewitnesses say the scene was filled with screams and people running in all directions to save their lives. Within minutes, what was meant to be a community celebration ended with bloodshed. At least 12 people lost their lives, and around 20 others were seriously injured.
Videos shared on social media captured the moments just before the attack — music playing, people smiling — followed by sounds of bullets and screams. Locals and families are still struggling to come to terms with the sudden violence that tore apart their neighbourhood.
Authorities confirmed the rising death toll, and Irapuato official Rodolfo Gómez Cervantes addressed the media, expressing grief and confirming that an investigation is now underway. President Claudia Sheinbaum also condemned the attack and assured the public that those responsible will be brought to justice. She called the event “very unfortunate” and promised full support for the victims and their families.
This is not the first time Guanajuato has seen such brutality. Just last month, another mass shooting occurred at a church event in San Bartolo de Berrios, killing seven people. The region has become one of Mexico’s most violent areas due to the ongoing battles between powerful criminal groups fighting for control over drug trafficking and other illegal activities. Shockingly, in just the first five months of this year, Guanajuato has already reported over 1,435 murders — the highest in the country.
Residents of Irapuato spent the next day washing away bloodstains from the streets, lighting candles, and mourning those who died. For many, the trauma of the night will take a long time to heal. Community members have called for stronger security and better protection, especially during public events.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the need for urgent attention to gang violence in Mexico. Families came together to celebrate faith and tradition, but instead, they now grieve for loved ones lost to senseless violence. The pain of the victims’ families is being felt across the nation, and citizens are demanding answers and justice.
