The gold also puts her at par with Cuban legend Felix Savon as the joint most successful boxer ever (both men and women) in the history of the World Boxing Championships to have won six gold medals.
Mary Kom, bronze medalist at the London Olympics 2012, surpassed Katie Taylor of Ireland who had won five World Championships titles.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to my country. The gold is all I can give to my country,” an emotional Mary Kom, also a Rajya Sabha MP and a mother of three, said after winning her sixth gold.
She had won her first world championships gold in 2002 and repeated it again in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018. In the 2001 edition, she lost the final and had to settle for a silver.
