Man beaten to death by drunk youths

PUBLISHED:

Close on the heels of the shocking lynching of Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das at Panjuri village under Dokmoka police station in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district amid child lifter rumours, a man was beaten to death by a group of drunk youths at Mukalmua in Nalbari district of Assam after he objected to bursting of firecrackers.

Jatin Das (40) was assaulted by the drunk youths outside a marriage venue at Ghurathal in Mukalmua. Police have arrested six persons in connection with the incident that has once again exposed the tendency among certain sections of people to take up law into their own hands.

The arrested persons have been identified as Jiten Talukdar, Dipankar Talukdar, Barun Talukdar, Achyut Talukdar, Harekrishna Talukdar and Bidyut Barman.

Eyewitness accounts said that some youths belonging to the bride’s family started bursting firecrackers outside the marriage venue around 11pm last night, minutes before the groom was to have arrived at the house of the bride to exchange wedding vows. Jatin Das, a daily-wage labourer, who was taking a stroll after finishing his dinner, entered into an altercation with the rowdy youths after they allegedly threw crackers directed at him.

Following the altercation, a group of around 10-12 youths reportedly chased Jatin and physically assaulted him that led to his death. Police and CRPF troopers were deployed at the crime scene with cops acting swiftly and arresting six of the accused murderers.

The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.

Meanwhile, the marriage could not be held following the barbaric incident with the groom and his family refusing to come to the bride’s house.
