GUWAHATI, Jan 14: Millions of devotees took the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam on Tuesday morning as the ‘Amrit Snan’ kicked off on Makar Sankranti on Tuesday.

Over 1 crore devotees, including foreign worshipers, had taken the holy dip to mark the ‘Shahi Snan’ on Monday kicking off the 45-day Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj.

The first ‘Amrit Snan’ holds special significance since the ‘Akharas’ take part in it.

The Maha Kumbh, billed as the largest religious congregation in the world, is expected to draw around 45 crore devotees — including lakhs of foreign tourists —with the event taking place after a gap of six years although according to seers, the celestial permutations and combinations for the event are taking place after 144 years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Monday welcomed everyone to Prayagraj saying the “Maha Kumbh embodies India’s timeless spiritual heritage and celebrates faith and harmony.”

The event, which will continue till February 26, has been set up at a sprawling area of around 4,000 hectares. Massive security arrangements have also been made across the city for the mega event.
