Assam Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Sunday once again took a dig at a section of intellectuals, claiming that they are dangerous for Assam besides asking people to stay clear of them and remain vigilant.
Sharpening his attack on Hiren Gohain and a section of other intellectuals, particularly the group who had shared the stage with Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Maulana Syed Arshad Madani at an event in New Delhi in November last year, Himanta Biswa Sarma accused them of trying to stall the update process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
“The group of intellectuals who shared the stage with Jamiat chief Madani at an event in New Delhi are very dangerous. They do not want the NRC updated and are trying to stall the update process. So I appeal to everyone to steer clear of them,” Sarma said in Guwahati on Sunday.

Reacting to the furore over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, he appealed to the people to have patience and wait till the updated NRC is published.
“I want to tell people to wait till the NRC is updated. I assure you that the BJP will not do anything that goes against the interest of the State and its people,” Sarma added.

On the other hand, the Assam BJP convened a meeting of senior party leaders to discuss the situation arising out of the citizenship bill and the NRC update process. The meeting was chaired by the party’s Northeast in-charge Ram Madhav.
After the meeting, Assam BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass said that the party will make its stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, clear after the updated citizen’s register is published.
